Île de Ré

The Île de Ré is a French island located in the Bay of Biscay , off the coast of  Aunis.

The historic center of the island is Saint-Martin de Ré , which forms with the neighboring commune of La Flotte , the urban unit of La Flotte with a population of 5,302 inhabitants in 2013. The most populous commune, however, is Saint-Martin de Ré. (3,363 inhabitants).

The island of Ré is separated from the continent by the Pertuis Breton and is located to the north of the islands of Aix, Oléro, Madame and Nôle , and Forts Boyard , Enet and Louvois located in the Petuis d’Antioch  to the south. Since May 19, 1988, it is connected to the continent by the Île de Ré bridge . Tourist, the island is nicknamed “Ré la blanche” because of the characteristic color of its traditional houses.
